4 Behaviors of High Performers   Anyone willing to pay the price can be a success. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of society is married to the status-quo. They want what was, not what can be. They believe that their intelligence, their personality and physical aptitudes are fixed.  This mindset hinders their ability to generate revenue, solve problems and create opportunities. Conversely, high performers think differently and, thus behave differently. They believe that if a person can change the way they think, they can change their habits and ability to succeed. High performers reach their professional goals not simply because of who they are or whom they know, but more often because of what they do. Because achievement is correlated with our happiness, it’s important to map out the actions and beliefs that get high performers where they wish to be. Below, you’ll find 4: 1) High performers clearly define the goals they wish to accomplish then fully commit with everything they have: Because they clarify what they wish to achieve, they can clearly envision obtaining that goal. They see it, believe in their ability to obtain it and then make it happen. This visualization, attitude and persistence propels them into a more meaningful existence. Moreover, maintaining unwavering confidence in getting to that desired end has a calming effect and mitigates stress. All of which furthers one’s progress. 2) Successful people achieve because they discover their passion and uncover their purpose: By uncovering what they are passionate about, they are able to pursue the careers which play to their strengths. Passion helps the successful discover the enormous untapped potential necessary to achieve complex goals.  Passion propels mental discipline while purpose helps define the actions necessary to take in order to facilitate success. In essence, the enjoyment of work combined with the knowledge of the purpose for doing a job helps build confidence, quell bad habits and heighten resiliency. Most importantly, passion fuels optimistic thinking; it turns tedious into challenging and stagnant into innovative. 3) High performers learn to recognize others’ emotions and handle relationships. This can also be described as emotional intelligence. Accomplished individuals understand that nothing of substance can be achieved without the support and cooperation of those around them. They prioritise learning to become empathetic and in-tune to the feelings of those around them. Because they are able to practice empathy, they gain a distinct ability to read others. As a result, they are far more effective at navigating the intricacies of the corporate landscape via creating powerful allies in the workplace. 4) High performers learn to manage their own emotions: Successful professionals gain the ability to shake off rampant anxiety, gloom, or irritability. While people who lack this ability are consistently battling distress, those who can properly manage the way they feel can bounce back far more rapidly from life’s setbacks and upsets. Many underestimate just how crucial emotional management is to career success. Controlling one’s inner-monologue is essential for paying attention, for self-motivation and for creativity. Successful individuals calm their mind through a few practices.  One of the most effective ways they do so is by engaging in slow and controlled deep breathing.   Even though it only takes a few minutes, deep breathing can greatly reduce metal chatter, rebalance the nervous system and lessen harmful physiological effects associated with fear and stress. 4 Reasons to Simply Shut Up and Listen Listening is more important than you may think. Not only does it improve interpersonal relationships with your friends, family, significant other and colleagues, but it can also boost your leadership skills, maximise productivity and make you more knowledgable in general. Here are our top 4 reasons why you just need to shut up and listen: 1. Knowledge is power Youve heard this famous saying  before. And its true.  The one way that you can truly continue to learn throughout life is by keeping an open mind, and open ears. If youre too busy telling others how to do things and not taking the time to really listen to others, its going to halt your ability to learn and absorb new,  exciting information. Learning new things keeps life interesting, and it never has to stop.  Taking the time of day to listen to everybody, regardless of their level of experience,  will  introduce you to a whole knew wealth of knowledge. Whether its the CEO of a large corporate brand, the receptionist of the office building or a pre-grad intern, it doesnt matter you have something to learn  from everyone. 2. People will listen If youre a nonstop gabbler who talks for what seems like hours, people will zone out and fail to  truly take on board anything you say. People are more likely to genuinely listen to someone who speaks  less, rather than more. Think of it as a quality over quantity thing. This isnt to say you should be a mouse in the corner of every meeting, networking event or office conversation, it just means you should make sure everything you say is of value. Dont talk for the sake of talking. 3. Quit planning Have you ever been in a large group discussion about a certain topic, and while someone else is having some airtime, youre busy planning what  youre going to add into the conversation next? Do you find yourself trying to  remember a relevant anecdote or question, and then mull it over in your mind until you have a chance to drop it into the chatter, because  you simply  HAVE to make  sure its heard? Well, quit doing this, because if you havent noticed already, the fact youre sitting there planning your next response means youve stopped probably stopped listening to whoever is talking. Its a hard habit to break, and were all guilty of doing  it. The trick is to realise what youre doing and actively stop  it. Let someone else be important for a  minute! 4. A leadership tool thats overlooked To be a great leader, you need to be a good listener. There are no two ways about it. If youre not listening to your employees or your customers, it will be highly detrimental to your business. Businesses cant grow and develop if theyre not taking on their customers and employees recommendations. If  leaders arent listening to the people who make their business run, theyll all just pack up and leave. Wouldnt you? How to be a better listener Maintain eye contact:  When youre in conversation with someone, avoid all other distractions  such as your mobile or your laptop. This can be difficult in things such as meetings, but once you programme yourself to actually stop, look and listen to people, youll notice your listening skills improve dramatically. Ask more questions:  Expand your knowledge by asking questions. Let it sink in:  When youre having a conversation with some, take a second for their answer to sink in. Ask people about themselves:  People love talking about themselves. If you ask another person about themselves or their brand, chances are they will have a lot to say. A Motivational Note From Our Founder, Anna Runyan When I was in 3rd grade, I started a Save the Earth Club. By middle school, I was organizing food for the homeless, teaching Sunday school, and visiting local nursing homes. As a teenager, I was leading anything I could. I was passionate about youth in government, our high school seatbelt challenge, and leading church mission trips. And then college happened. I studied abroad, got straight A’s, worked three internships and was completely confused about what I  wanted to be when I grew up. I thought I did everything right but felt stuck and confused. So I took the first job that came along. I worked for a top consulting company for eight years.  I climbed the corporate ladder. I traveled all around the country. I made an impact. I was challenged. But I was still unhappy, confused and stuck. Then something changed. I started a blog, sold an online course (before I even created it)  and found my passion. I chose to write and teach about what I loved. It didn’t matter what I was teaching; I just loved sharing my knowledge with  others. On an average day, I would wake up early, blog, go to my day job  and  then teach at night. The beauty of it is this. I was taking baby steps and imperfect action every single day inspired by multiple books, classes, websites, and coaches I was working with. I was learning about my purpose, interests, and improving my health and life balance. Then, I had this lightbulb moment. Today’s ambitious women  thrive in a  community, supporting one another to reach our goals and dreams. Why did I have to search so many places (and pay so much money) to find the support and education that I wanted in my career and life? If life is all about balance, why wasn’t there ONE place that balanced everything I needed for my career success, happiness, health and life FOR me?  Why couldn’t all this be in one place for this busy, classy mama? I think it can. That’s why I started CCG. There’s  a revolution that celebrates the balance of work, health, personal development, beauty, motherhood, fashion, money, food, travel, and lifestyle. Some say it’s impossible. Well, I happen to believe that  anything is possible. Changing What We Expect Work to Be At its peak, Kodak employed close to 60,000 employees in Rochester alone. Right now, the numbers are well under 10,000, and dropping. They are not the only big guy shrinking, Xerox, IBM, and many other giants have reduced their workforce or disappeared all together in the last 10 years. What this means is that those tens of thousands of people who grew up in a company culture like Kodak, Xerox or IBM have been forced to look for a new job. But the new company culture/mentality is nothing like the one they knew. When I consulted at Kodak, I was sent to a basement where training was delivered. Sort of a bad idea to begin with to have training in the basement, but AsI entered the hallway to the training rooms, there was a brass plaque with a raised image of George Eastman and a quote If you come through these doors, we will train you This plaque had been on the corner of a building somewhere and now resides in a dingy basement where few can see it. Wonder why? The notion that employeesare lifers, and should be treated as such, is gone, long gone. GE employees used to be referred to as family. Again, that is no longer. This new work culture is difficult for the older worker to relate to. It is absolutely not what they want. They want what they had before- a company that would pay a good wage and take care of them. A stable environment. A sense of knowing they will be rewarded for doing a good job. The majority of companies in Rochester today, and I am sure everywhere, employee 250 or fewer employees. They are lean and mean, or at least try to be. They are very vulnerable to the conditions of the marketplace, causing instability in some cases. They are not nurturing a family environment, they are struggling for survival each and every day and that often translates into a competitive environment. Survival of the fittest. They adopt a no frills attitude. They move fast and when necessary change. There is little infrastructure (overhead). Expenditures have to be thoroughly justified. (Yes, all of this is a gross generalization, I know, but there is a huge difference in how business gets done in a small company.) To fit in, the new employee needs to understand this new culture. To succeed, they will need to adapt. At least understanding these differences and theknowing that it will be close to impossible to have what they had before, will allow the older worker to be more realistic in what they are looking for.
