Dont Get Creative With Your Resume

Dont Get Creative With Your Resume Dont Get Creative With Your Resume Well, guess what? Its not going to work. Its time to stop fooling around with your resume and stick to the tried and true.U.S. News World Report published an interestingarticle on the subject. The problem with this strategy, the article says is that hiring managers can see right through the most common resume tricks, and using them will usually backfire on you. Here are some of the tricks it suggests avoiding and why1. Using a functional resume instead of a chronological resume to hide weaknesses in your work history.According to the article, employers knowjob seekers use functional resumes to hide gaps in their work history. Funnily enough, this commonly suggested trick is little more than a red flag for most employers.2. Shortening your resume by shrinking the margins and font instead of cutting content.Employers are aware of this strategy, too. All it shows them is that you dont know how to edit your work prop erly.3. Leaving dates off your resume to avoid age discrimination. Dates of employment are such a standard part of resumes that employers will notice if you dont include them.U.S. News World Report compares leaving dates off of your resume to leaving the house without your pants. On her blog, job coach Susan Ireland says, As a general rule, you dont need to go back more than 10 years however, if its to your benefit, you may go back further. In order to decide how far back you should, Ireland suggests asking yourself a few questions, including How old do you want to appear on your resume? and How relevant are your earlier lages to your job objective?. You can read the full list on her blog.4. Littering your resume with keywords to get by resume-screening software.U.S. News World Report says that a significant number of companies dont even use resume-screening software especially smaller companies so this trick is generally useless. If the company does use resume-screening software, theres a good chance theyll find you, even without the barrage of keywords provided youre qualified for the position in the first place.5. Using a fancy or unusual resume design to stand out and catch the hiring managers eye.U.S. News World Report says that unusual resume designs sacrifice content for flash. Hiring managers dont want flash they want easily accessible, relevant information.Thisreminds me of a kid at my college. He put his resumes on grocery bags. His tagline was, Im so willing to work for you I would brown-bag it every day. It seemed clever, but nobody knew exactly what the heck he was talking about. Trudeau Do you want to win an argument or change the world

Trudeau Do you want to win an argument or change the worldTrudeau Do you want to win an argument or change the worldBelow is the transcript (and video) of Justin Trudeaus commencement speech to NYUs Class of 2018Bonjour tout le monde Merci et flicitationsI am very happy to be here with you today, deeply honored. Thank you for that kind introduction, Niobe. Andy, its wonderful to see you again. I am so grateful for the honor you and NYU have given me today. Now, you know - you may elend know, but Andrew is an honorary Canadian and British Columbian because, like me, he studied at the University of British Columbia back in the day. It makes me proud that Canada welches part of Andrews formation, just as NYU has helped form so many amazing Canadians, including two members of my own staff.Im actually told that 180 of the NYU class of 2018 are Canadians. Hello Welcome, my friendsI have to say, to be here now, speaking with all of you - in Yankee Stadium, one of the greatest places in on e of the greatest cities on Earth - is more than a little humbling. My friends, you are now NYU graduates - the best and the brightest. You have great potential and possibilities. And therefore, you have enormous responsibility, too. So today, Id like to talk about the nature of both those things, and Id like to offer you a challenge. One that I think is essential for your future success as individuals, and as the leaders that you are becoming.Itscommencement seasonFollow LaddersCommencement Addresses magazine on Flipboardto watch and read all of the fruchtwein inspiring speeches from this year and years past.Among the many things I admire about NYU, is that about a fifth of the students are international. And a similar proportion are the very first in their families to go to college. This group is truly diverse in every possible way. And I think that is an extraordinarily valuable and important thing. When I graduated in the early 1990s, I went on a trip around the world with a f ew good friends - who actually remain good friends to this day, which is sort of a miracle. We trekked and traveled, mostly over land, from Europe to Africa to Asia. And that remains one of the great formative experiences of my life. It welches an amazing adventure. It welches also a really important contributor to my continued, broader education. Because it forced me, really for the first time as an adult, to meet, engage, befriend people whose views and experiences, ideas, values and language were very different from my own. When a kid from Montreal meets a Korean fisherman living in Mauritania, befriends a Russian veteran of their Afghan war, or a shopkeeper and his family living in Danang, interesting c onversations always happen. Now, maybe some of you have talked about doing something like a great trip like that after graduation. But Id be willing to bet one of the first things you heard was a warning You cant do that in this day and age. Its notlage safe But heres my question Is it really just the issue of physical safety that makes our loved ones so anxious at the idea of us getting out there, or is it the threat that if we look past our frames - the frames of our own lives, of our own communitys structured values and belief systems - to truly engage with people who believe fundamentally different things, we could perhaps be transformed into someone new and unfamiliar to those who know and love us?See, theres no question that todays world is more complex than it was in the mid-1990s. There are serious and important problems that we are grappling with and will continue to grapple with. But we are not going to arrive at mutual respect, which is where we solve common problems, if we cocoon ourselves in an ideological, social or intellectual bubble. Now, we can see it all around us - theres a peculiar fascination with dystopia in our culture today. You see it everywhere on film and TV, but the truth is that, on balance, we have the good fortune to live in a time of tremendous possibility and potential a time when it is within our grasp to eliminate extreme poverty, to end terrible diseases like malaria and TB, and to offer a real chance at an education to everyone on this planet. But for us to move forward, to keep moving and moving forward, we have to do it together - all together. Humanity has to fight our tribal mindset. We go to the same church? Cool, youre in my tribe. You speak my language? Youre in my tribe. Youre an NYU alumni? Youre in my tribe. You play Pokmon Go? Youre a vegetarian? You like the Yankees? You go to the gun range? Youre pro-choice? Tribe, tribe, tribe. But of course, its not the belonging part that is the problem, its the corollary You are part of my tribe, and they are not.Whether its race, gender, language, sexual orientation, religious or ethnic origin, or our beliefs and values themselves - diversity doesnt have to be a weakness. It can be our greatest strength. Now often, people talk about striving for tolerance. Now, dont get me wrong there are places in this world where a little more tolerance would go a long way, but if were being honest right here, right now, I think we can aim a little higher than mere tolerance.Think about it Saying I tolerate you actually means something like, Ok, I grudgingly admit that you have a right to exist, just dont get in my face about it, and oh, dont date my sister. Theres not a religion in the world that asks you to tolerate thy neighbor. So lets try for something a little more like acceptance, respect, friendship, and yes, even love. And why does this matter? Because, in our aspiration to relevance in our love for our families in our desire to contribute, to make thi s world a better place, despite our differences, we are all the same. And when you meet and befriend someone from another country or another culture who speaks a different language or who worships differently, you quickly realize this. And heres my main point, and the challenge Im offering you today. ur celebration of difference needs to extend to differences of values and belief, too. Diversity includes political and cultural diversity. It includes a diversity of perspectives and approaches to solving problems. See, its far too easy, with social media shaping our interactions, to engage only with people with whom we already agree - members of our tribe. Well, this world is and must be bigger than that.So here is my request As you go forward from this place, I would like you to make a point of reaching out to people whose beliefs and values differ from your own. I would like you to listen to them, truly listen, and try to understand them, and find that common ground. You have a worl d of opportunity at your fingertips. But as you go forward from here, understand that just around the corner, a whole different order of learning awaits, in which your teachers will come from every station in life, every education level, every belief system, every lifestyle. And I hope you will embrace that. You have been students, you will continue to learn all your lives, but now it is also time for you to become leaders. In every generation, leaders emerge because they one day awake to the realization that its not up to someone else to fix this problem, or take up that cause. Its up to them. So now is the time for you to lead.Leaders. Now, Im sure thats a word thats been tossed around you and at you quite a bit over the past few hours, days, weeks and years. Leaders of tomorrow. Leaders of today. But what does it mean? What attributes does a 21st century leader need to have? What do people need most from their leaders today and tomorrow? Now, I think you need to be brave. Really b rave. And I know, when you think of courageous leaders, you think of those folks who stood implacably and fearlessly, anchored in their sense of rightness, willing to pit their ideals against all comers, against the slings and arrows aimed their way. Well, I dont think thats brave enough. I dont think thats good enough for what our shared future will ask of you. I actually dont think its ever been good enough.Let me tell you a bit about Wilfrid Laurier, a promising young lawyer at the end of the 19th century, who would go on to become my second-favorite Prime Minister. He was raised and educated as a proud, Catholic French-Canadian, an exemplary representative of one side of the two identities that had come together to found Canada just a few decades before. The two solitudes - the other half being English-speaking, Protestant, and fiercely loyal to the British Crown - accommodated each other, cooperated together, and generally put up with each other to build our country, but stil l felt all too well the divisions and fault lines that had led them through almost a millennium of tensions and wars between English and French. It was impressed upon young Wilfrid by his teachers and elders that he must stand up unflinchingly for the values and the identity of his heritage, those beliefs and approaches that were his birthright, and would be his legacy. That, they told him, was leadership. But Wilfrid grew to believe otherwise. He realized that its actually easy to stand rooted in the conviction that you are right, and either wait for others to come to you, or wait for your chance to impose your rightness on others. He saw that its actually harder to seek compromise, to dig deep into yourself, your ideas and convictions, honestly and rigorously, to see where you can give and where you do need to stand, while opening yourself up to the other point of view, to seek out and find that common ground. And that remains Wilfrid Lauriers political legacy, more than 100 years later. To let yourself be vulnerable to another point of view - thats what takes true courage. To open yourself to anothers convictions, and risk being convinced, a little, or a lot, of the validity of their perspective. Now thats scary discovering that someone you vehemently disagree with might have a point. Might even be right. But it shouldnt be scary, or threatening. Particularly to all of you, who have worked so hard these past years to pursue truth, to learn, to grow. Being open to others is what has gradually led Canadians to the understanding that differences can and must be a source of strength, not of weakness. And I say gradually, because 20th century Canadian history is filled with counter-examples and terrible setbacks that we are still trying to remedy today, most notably the systemic marginalization and unterdrckung of Indigenous Peoples. Were not perfect, of course, but that sense of openness, respect for other points of view, and acceptance of each other really does underpin our approach as we try to solve the great problems of our time. And not because were nice - but of course we are - but because by bringing together diverse perspectives, you get a much better shot at meeting those challenges. And thats how we come back to you and the leaders the world needs you to be.Leadership has always been about getting people to act in common cause. Were going to build a new country Were going to war Were going to the moon It usually required convincing, or coercing, a specific group to follow you. And the easiest way to do that has always been through tribal contrasts They believe in a different God They speak a different language They dont want the same things as we do. But the leadership we need most today and in the years to come is leadership that brings people together. That brings diversity to a common cause. This is the antithesis of the polarization, the aggressive nationalism, the identity politics that have grown so common of late. Its ha rder, of course. Its always been easier to divide than unite. But mostly, it requires true courage. Because if you want to bring people around to your way of thinking, you need to first show them that you are open to theirs. That you are willing to enter into a conversation that might change your mind. Show respect for their point of view, and you have a better chance of actually having them listen to yours. And regardless of what happens, you will have had a genuine exchange that focused on understanding, not on winning a debate or scoring points. And you will both be improved for it.Let me be very clear this is not an endorsement of moral relativism or a declaration that all points of view are valid. Female genital mutilation is wrong, no matter how many generations have practiced it. Anthropogenic climate change is real, no matter how much some folks want to deny it. But heres the question do you want to win an argument and feel good about how superior you are? Or do you actually want to change behaviors and beliefs? See, its been pointed out that one of the many differences between Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis was that Davis preferred to win a debate, while Lincoln would rather win the war. And thats the question Do you want to win an argument or do you want to change the world? With malice toward none, and charity toward all. Let those greatest words of this countrys greatest president guide your ambitions, your hopes for yourselves, your families, your country, your planet. There is no shortage of cynicism and selfishness in the world. Be their answer, their antidote. I am abundantly optimistic about the future because of you. It is yours to make and mold and shape. The world eagerly awaits, indeed requires, your ideas. Your initiative. Your enterprise. Your energy. Your passion and compassion. Your idealism, and your ambition. But remember that true courage is the essential ingredient in all your efforts.Congratulations, Class of 2018. Now go chan ge the world.Merci.

5 Tips to Help You Make Better Presentations That Will Excite Your Audience

5 Tips to Help You Make Better Presentations That Will Excite Your Audience5 Tips to Help You Make Better Presentations That Will Excite Your AudienceBusiness presentations are an important part of everyday working life.Done right, theyre an excellent way to bring information and ideas to life. Done wrong, they have the potential to send your audience to sleep. Here are 5 steps to help you make your presentations more exciting and keep your audience alert and engaged.1. Know what you want to communicateAsk yourselfwhat makes your audience attend? What are they hoping to get from your presentation? Then make up your mind about what information you want to convey. Finally, see where these two intersect and stick to those key points. When looking to deliver what you set out to do, make aya your talk has a beginning, a middle and an end.Your slides will usually contain multiple points. Highlight one or two key messages you want your audience to take home, for example by putting a red text bo x around a key point when designing the slide in PowerPoint. And remember, its better to finish early than to overrun. Keep it under 20 minutes (unless youre a keynote speaker) and leave time for questions at the end.2. Engage your audienceBefore you launch into your presentation, its important to establish a relationship with your audience.Acknowledge your audience first up, e.g. ask if people can hear you. You can also pepper your presentation with rhetorical questions, such as and what conclusions can we draw from this? or how do we know this is true?Leave time for questions and clarification at the end so people feel ownership of the material.Start strong and own your space as you take the floor. Stand up straight, lean forward and talk with confidence. Finally, try to play with pitch, volume and pace to maintain the audiences interest. Use gestures, rather than standing stock still, but keep them controlled.READ THISHow to Start Networking? 15 Pick-up Lines Thatll Boost Your Conf idence3. Give your audience mental breaks by interactingIf youre interacting with your audience rather than delivering a monologue they are more likely to actively listen and remember what youre saying.Take a break now and again to check in with your audience it gives them a brief mental break and helps them connect with you.Audience response systems (ARS), like CLiKAPAD, can be an excellent tool to keep your audiences attention focused on whats happening on stage or wake up a crowd during PowerPoint presentations.Whether youre presenting to a training seminar, a geschftlicher umgang meeting, a QA session, workshop or conference, starting out with a group activity using an ARS can also prove to be a great ice breaker.Participants can give instant feedback anonymously and honestly using a credit card sized keypad. They can vote, share opinions, take quizzes, polls and brainstorm ideas.ARS technology can also enable the presenter to check knowledge levels on a topic before training starts and test understanding afterwards.Use the feedback to immediately flash up, embedded in your Powerpoint presentation, as a graph in your chosen style and share the results with your audience.4. Dont just read out the slidesDont be tempted to read your slides out word for word, or pack them with too many bullet points. Much better to use them as a memory aid, then add what you think and feel about the subject.Slides should support what you are saying, not outline the entire presentation. Think of ways to communicate in other ways than just using text.Use visuals to aid understanding graphs, drawings, charts, illustrations and photographs are all great ways to enliven a presentation. Video clips are also an excellent way to keep your audience alert.5. Harness the power of neuroscienceStronger, more enduring memories are formed in the brain when a person is relaxed and when the neurons in the brain connected with memory fire in sync with certain brain waves. This means it is rea lly helpful to try and relax yourself and your audience early on.Plan your talk around a few key points and practise it out loud. You could serve tea and coffee beforehand to get your audience feeling alert and in a good mood.Once youve started, use plenty of eye contact and smile perhaps tritt off with a story or a personal anecdote to help form an emotional bond with your audience. The idea is to aim for high levels of the neurotransmitters chemical messengers that connect your body and brain to create a kind of energised calm. Too much stress can trigger the stress hormone cortisol, which can block creativity and inhibit information retention.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

The Advantages and Benefits of Public Service Work

The Advantages and Benefits of Public Service WorkThe Advantages and Benefits of Public Service WorkAlthough there is a huge gap between private sector and public interest salaries, public interest jobs offer a number of key advantages over private practice. Below are six advantages of public service work. Furthering the Public Good A primary reason lawyers and others undertakepublic interestorpro bonowork is to further the public good. Helping underserved people, groups, and causes can provide a feeling of personal satisfaction and achievement that you might not gain defending large corporations in private practice. Public interest work can allow you to achieve greater goals beyond earning a paycheck, such as working to effect societal change, supporting an important public cause, or providing equal access to justice for needy individuals and organizations. In fact, the lowest-paid lawyers (typically those doing public interest work) report the highest levels of happiness. Publi c interest and pro bono work also provide the opportunity to become involved in your local community by performing public service activities of a legal and non-legal nature. For students, it is sometimes easier to findinternshipswith public interest employers than with law firms and for-profit organizations, who tend to hire on a very limited basis for summer jobs. And its sometimes possible to get funding for your public interest summer job from your law school or from a nationwide public interest organization, such as Equal Justice Works. Valuable Work Experience Law students, new lawyers, paralegals, and other legal professionals can gain valuable work experience through internships in the public interest sector or via pro bono work in law school. Such experience is important at a time when jobs are scarce many employers do not have the time or resources to train new attorneys and legal personnel. Since small firms want to hire candidates who can hit the ground running, and l arge firms often funnel substantive legal work to experienced associates, working in the public interest sector can help you gain the work experience you need. Public interest work is a great stepping stone to private practice and employers appreciate a commitment to public service. Better Work-Life Balance Public interest jobs typically offer a betterwork-life balancethan law firm jobs. 9-to-5 work days, flexible schedules and part-time opportunities are common in the public interest sector. Unlike private practice, individuals employed in non-profits, the government, and legal service organizations are not under pressure to meet high billable hour quotas, gain face-time with partners, or spend free time on client development activities. The work culture is often more relaxed because the focus is on service rather than profit. Exposure to Multiple Practice Areas When you join a law firm, you are typically assigned to a specific practice group. However, public service and pr o bono work can help new grads explore avariety of practice areaswhile performing valuable work. At a legal service organization, for example, you might assist with a variety of cases ranging from landlord/tenantand zuzug issues to child custody and civil rights. You will gain valuable insight and useful knowledge in the procedural and substantive issues surrounding many areas of law. Mentoring and Networking Opportunities If you are a student or new graduate, public interest and pro bono work can also help you gain mentors, networking contacts, and job references. While law firms and corporations are often focused on the bottom line, public interest venues are less focused on profit. Therefore, they may offer more time to develop mentoring relationships and contacts. And taking on a pro bono project organized by the local bar association can be a great way to meet practicing attorneys in areas of particular interest since they often volunteer to serve as mentors to newer volunt eers. Recognition and Honors Lawyers have an ethical obligation to provide public service and give back to the community. This duty also extends to some other legal professionals, such as paralegals. Many law firms and legal organizations recognize and honor lawyers and legal professionals who have demonstrated leadership in their community by engaging in public service and pro bono activities. Hiring managers also appreciate a commitment to pro bono and public service work. Therefore, this font of work experience can be a great resume-booster.

The 25 Best Jobs in America in 2016

The 25 Best Jobs in America in 2016 What do a data scientist, a nurse practitioner, and a construction superintendent have in common? All three of them hold positions that rank on the 2016 edition of Glassdoors list of the 25 Best Jobs in America, coming in at No. 1, No. 23, and No. 22, respectively.Glassdoors rankings are based on three factors, according to Scott Dobroski, associate director of corporate communications at GlassdoorEarning potential How much money a person can expect to make in the roleCareer opportunity The potential for career advancement that the role affordsHiring opportunity How likely it is that a person can land the jobWere all probably familiar with those first two criteria, but I think hiring opportunity may need some extra explanation. (It sure did for me)Dobroski describes hiring opportunity as such There mightbe a great job, but if theres only twenty openings for that job in the U.S., you probably cant get hired for that role. The list is largely dominated by tech positions (No. 18 UX designer No. 5 mobile developer No. 12 software development manager etc.), with health care roles coming in second place. When you consider the stability of certain jobs and industries, Dobroski says, it makes sense that tech and health care would be prominently displayed on a list like this.We all know theres a lot of economic data that shows tech and health care continue to be great fields, Dobroski says. Well probably see roles like ansicht on this list for many years to come.Stability is an important trend uniting all the disparate jobs in the top 25, but Dobroski notes that theres also a second, more subtle characteristic that fruchtwein of these jobs have in common. He calls it nuance, by which he means that many of these jobs exist across industries.HR manager, business development manager, software engineer these are all roles that all companies need in this day and age, Dobroski says. Whether youre Walmart, Co stco, or Starbucks you compete for these roles, and youre competing with tech giants like Google or Apple for these roles.Recruiters, Pay AttentionThis list isnt onlyuseful for job seekers in need of lucrative, stable careers. Dobroski says that recruiters should pay attention to the top 25 jobs, and if they find themselves recruiting for any of these roles, they should make a big deal out of it.What many of these job titles have in common is that demand for them across the U.S. is outpacing supply, Dobroski explains. If you are an organization trying to hire for one of these roles, you should be touting it as a best job. Why? Because job seekers are more likely to pay attention to you if your can show them that yourerecruiting for one of the best jobs in America.Instead of just another job floating by, if job seekers see that youre recruiting for a best job, theyll perk up, Dobroski says.Below, you can check out the full list.
